What makes a PC Slow?

RAM SIZE (Random Access Memory) . If the RAM you have in your computer or laptop is not big enough for the operating system (XP, Windows 2000, etc) and the programs (anti-virus, MS Office, etc) that you have on your PC or laptop, the computer will run at a much slower speed than the same computer with more RAM installed. (eg: Computer has only 128 MB of RAM instead of 256 MB or 512 MB).

SPYWARE on the system. Spyware may be hidden in the system causing the computer to run slow by competing for resources (CPU, RAM, Internet Bandwidth) with the O.S. (Operating System) and programs.

VIRUSES on the system. Viruses on the computer will also slow the computer down in the same manner as Spyware.

System file damage or corruption It is also possible that a computer will run slow from corrupted or damaged system files and registry keys caused by viruses, spyware, malware (Malicious software), improper computer shutdown, power outages/spikes, not enough room on the hard drive and other causes.

COMPUTER LEFT ON FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME If you leave a computer running a Windows operating system for days at a time without shutting it down, it will eventually decline in performance until the computer is restarted.

TOO MANY PROGRAMS RUNNING AT ONCE If you have too many programs running at once they will be competing for resources, therefore sharing the CPU, RAM and possibly Internet bandwidth capability. (eg: Anti-virus program performing a scan while Windows is downloading updates and you are surfing the internet at the same time).
